I came across a nice little post that is in one of my favorite categories - a post about building a NAS device for backup from scratch using parts. The writer intends this post to be the start of a series in which he will also examine several NAS software options:
We are going to try to build a redundant server which cost less than $500 (at least that’s what the Drobo costs without hard drives) in parts and consume less than 55 watts. While giving us a reliable place to easily and FAST save our most precious files. I will post other articles on how to install and use different free NAS software.
Cost of materials of his NAS was low (including 3 enterprise type hard drives):
I believe cases are very expensive so I choose the cheapest I found, an iMicro ATX Tower for $30.16 (update: you get what you pay, it also came with a 400W power supply).
Total cost of materials:
- Intel D525MW for $85.07
- 2 x Crucial 2GB DDR3 SODIMM for $25.98
- 3 x 500GB Enterprise Hard Disk Drive for $296.31
- iMicro ATX Tower for $30.16
TOTAL COST: $437.52 (under the estimated budget!!)
I'll be keeping an eye on his site and will report back when he provides more information.
