TheGearsphere has a great tutorial covering how to install Unraid. Unraid is a NAS operating system using one drive parity to protect the stored files using the least amount of overhead possible. Unraid runs from an USB thumb drive. The Limetech site has good instructions for installing Unraid, but this new tutorial has a large number of screen shots and step by step instructions.
One of the main advantages to Unraid over conventional RAID setups is that with an Unraid system:
If you were unfortunate enough to have two drive failures at the same time then you would only lose the data on those disks not the rest of the array! If it were a true RAID config you’d be SOL!
The tutorial has many screen shots so that when you install Unraid you will not be surprised. It covers everything from downloading the NAS software to setting up your USB drive and doing the first boot.
