UPDATE: Synology issues press release about the problem and a fix.
A couple of weeks ago I posted about problems some users are having with their new DS1512+ and DS1812+ NAS devices from Synology. See that post here. This will be just a quick update of what I have learned since then. Apparently, the problem occurs after using the NAS for a week or more and rebooting or restarting the device. The NAS does not boot properly, and ends up with a blue blinking light on the front - hence the name "blue blink of death". This page on the Synology forum is the start of 17 pages (as of this writing) of discussion of the issue.
Several reports indicate that there may be a hardware problem on the motherboard of some of the NAS's that Synology has tracked down. Page 17 of the thread has this message from user "Jovially":
Google coolpc, a Taiwan site, The root cause may due to the flash chip.
Spoken to a local distributor, the new batch of stock is not affected. Not sure is it a right time to get the 1512 model.Source: Synology forum
A couple of posts below that is a post from "henkg" who provides a translation of information on http://www.coolpc.com.tw/:
Flash DSM LED! Occur mainly because the chip supplier to provide a flash quality of materials in different ways, it may cause problems usually occur the machine can not restart when users attempt to upgrade the DSM operating system upgrade fails, and along with the blue LED The lights continued flashing the case!
Understood that affected contain DS212j, DS1512 + and DS1812 + three models...

Supposedly, Synology engineers are working full-time to track down the problem and provide a fix. Also, allegedly new stock of the two or three affected devices are not plagued by this problem.
I will post later as I learn more.
