Now that the problems with the flash memory on a few of the DS1512+ NAS models from Synology have apparently been solved, I thought it was time to take a look at some of the early reviews of this fast 5-drive NAS. The DS1512+ has five bays standard but is upgrade-able to a total of 15 hard drives with the addition of two of the DX-510 expansion boxes. Note that the Techspot review, although only a few weeks old, does not acknowledge the compatibility of the 4 TB drives which are clearly listed on the Synology compatibility chart. With the capability of using the newest 4TB drives, the total possible space is an astronomical 60TB (when unformatted).

Techspot has provided a 10 page review of the DS1512+. The Techspot review describes the speed of the DS1512+ NAS:

Known as the DS1512+, the revamped 5-bay device boasts read and write speeds of 200.31MB/s and 194.83MB/s, up from the DS1511+'s quoted rates of 197.8MB/s and 165.91MB/s. Additionally, the dual core 2.13GHz Intel Atom D2700 (32nm Cedar Trail) should provide a little more oomph than the dated 1.8GHz Atom D525 (45nm Pineview), while redesigned hardware includes a new cooling system.

These extras come at a reasonable $100 premium over last year's DS1511+, which should position the DS1512+ as a respectable contender in the current NAS market -- or so the spec sheets would have us believe. Let's take a closer look at the hardware and software (including the recently released DiskStation Manger 4.0) before we greet Synology's latest offering with our usual array of benchmarks.

The review points out that the DS1512+ has upgraded cooling over last year's model. The fans are more easily removed to make replacement easier without having to remove the whole case.

The review summarizes as follows:

Similar sentiments can be expressed for Synology's dedication to build quality, aesthetics, performance and features. With an MSRP of $900, Synology's DS1512+ isn't the cheapest NAS solution around, but it's arguably the best option available for professionals or growing small and medium businesses who need fast and reliable networked storage that is greatly expandable beyond the base five bays. Home users may want to consider one of the company's cheaper two to four-bay devices, instead.

I agree with the conclusions, but would add that there is no reason to relegate these features and this speed to business use only. The DS1512+ NAS is also a good fit for a high-end home system looking to stream and store large HD video files while providing a great backup system to any home network as well.

The Synology DS1512+ NAS is available at Newegg and Amazon.
