I recently spotted a discussion thread over on the AVS Forum regarding Windows Home Server 2011. Specifically, the thread asks why is Windows Home Server preferable over just using the basic sharing functions available in most modern Windows platforms such as Windows 7?
Considering that the question is being asked from a home use perspective, this is a pretty reasonable thing to ask. The speeds provided by Windows 7 and up in sharing are more than sufficient for most activities that individuals will be using the software for.
The main point that comes up early on in the thread might be the main argument for most people: Windows Home Server 2011 has a stronger backup system than anything you'll find on a basic Windows 7 install, so if something goes catastrophically wrong with your local data storage, you can just backup from a nightly archive of your hard drive.
