A fascinating thread over at Overclock.Net showing the thread starter modifying a Cooler Master690 case to potentially house 22 drives for an Unraid server. The writer mounts the motherboard in a pretty unique way on the back-plane of the case. Look about half way down this page to see the motherboard mounted.
A couple of questions are answered on page two of the thread:
I assume you are going headless on this? Interested to see how this comes out. Why not do a mini-itx with a 24 port card?Headless naturally...
I have a plan to use PCIe extensions to connect an Intel NIC to the last available slot at the back so that I don't need to cut any openings to the side door.
That's why the MB is crammed so high into the case.
That is the only connection I need on a regular basis. UnRaid is controlled completely via a web interface and sometimes telnet/putty.
Figured that if I ever need to have this connected to a monitor it would be in a such a state that I would have to dig inside the case anyways. As for the mini-ITX and a 24-port sas...
The MB was chosen for the possibility to a greater selection of upgrades should I ever need the muscles to do some transcoding or even ESXi/virtualization. As for the Supermicro cards they have been tried and tested rock solid with UnRaid and the price/availability is reasonable here in Europe.
