I came across a post a few months old on Tomshardware where they did a comprehensive review of the Hitachi 4TB hard drives and compares it to the 3TB hard drives that are available from Western Digital, Seagate and Hitachi itself. As of this writing, the Hitachi are still the most available 4TB hard drives as far as I can tell. Toms reviews both versions of the Hitachi 4 TB drives - the 5K4000, a 5400 RPM drive, and the 7200 RPM Deskstar 7K4000.
Of course, no hard drive with a spinning platter keeps up with modern solid state disc drives (SSD). So if ultimate speed is your goal, go with an SSD. For tasks such as serving large media files, though, larger regular hard drives are far more cost effective. Toms concludes its review with:
Four terabyte disks are a good option when you need big capacity and don't have space for multiple 3.5" devices. However, their price premium keeps us from recommending broader adoption.
