DS211 Synology | NAS Buying Guide

DS211 Synology

The DS211 Synology NAS device is a two bay NAS that preceeded the DS212 NAS that is the 2012 model. The DS 211 was a very popular NAS because of its performance and capability balance. It is still widely available, and it is still available both as a brand new device and as a used NAS on Ebay (and elsewhere). (Click here for an Ebay listing.)

Synology has updated the software for both old and new Synology NAS's - so buying an older model does not mean that you will lose out on new software features.

Testing indicates that the DS211 Synology NAS is still one of the fastest two bay devices on the market today with speeds approaching 105 MB/sec reading under Raid 1 and 55 MB/sec writing in Raid 1. This speed is more than sufficient to stream multiple HD video streams at the same time - one of the most demanding uses of a home or small business NAS.

DS211 Synology Review

Slashgear in their review of the DS211 Synology had this to say:

Performance

Despite the relatively low amount of RAM Synology has outfitted the DiskStation DS211 with, we had no issues with performance. Set up as a RAID 1 array, the DS211 managed 101.37 MB/sec read rates and 56.12 MB/sec write rates, when tested with a 1.5GB file. That makes it roughly on a par with the DS411+ when it comes to read speeds, though around half as fast when writing data.

Wrap-Up

There’s a huge amount to like about the Synology DiskStation DS211. Not only is the NAS well made and compact, the DiskStation Manager 3.0 software stands head and shoulders above rivals for not only ease of initial setup but for ongoing use.
