How important is having the right amount of storage for all of your network needs? Without having a massive computer system, hard disk storage is the answer for many users for increased server space. The advantages of having a storage system that provides several solutions for users in the virtual environment begin with being ahead of the competition. This system provided by the QNAP TS-259 Pro+ NAS is the investment for business owners who are looking to manage their own servers. The NAS system, or network attached storage brings better control and management to end-users.

This management allows business owners to reduce the costs that are incurred with traditional file servers. The actual process is that the NAS device is run on an embedded operating system on simple hardware. The storage system has support from hard drives but does not include a keyboard or monitor because the design is literally for storage. It is much easier to manage than an actual file server.

Design

The QNAP TS-259 Pro has quite a few advantages for the home office or small business that needs to move forward in data solutions. This product is a hard disk storage unit that has a 1.8GHz Intel Atom dual core processor. It has 1GB of memory and has two hard disk drives bays for the users. Some of the features are the iSCSI services, data sharing across multiple platforms and all-in-one server applications.

The integrated applications work across the various platforms accessible to users such as Windows, Mac, Linux and Unix. The server options are varied as well for the business that needs access to server capabilities for FTP, printers, web and data files.

Software and Performance Features

Reliability is important for consistent performance and this hard disk storage system provides that consistency. The iSCSI services incorporate processes that allow the user to reap the benefits of an efficient and effective business storage center. Compatibility with the Microsoft virtual environment is proven and the certifications for VMware® Ready and Citrix® Ready literally make this a great shared network.

The importance of an iSCSI process system is that additional iSCSI targets can be added for flexible storage expansion. The iSCSI initiator adds targets to the network and these targets are then transformed into virtual disk drives. This process increases the storage capacity.

The TS-259 Pro + can host multiple websites because it has the built-in web server. This feature is a plus for website designers and businesses that need more than one site. This feature also provides the opportunity for e-shops, blogs and other money-making systems where you maintain control.

The integration features allow for successful seamless connection with existing virtual LAN applications and wireless LAN applications. The connection is easily accomplished with a b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. The S.M.A.R.T. feature allows you to monitor the status of your hard drives by checking the disks as well as scanning for bad blocks. The Smart Fan is adjusted accordingly based on the server speed giving you control over the temperature of your server. Manual settings will help to make sure the optimum temperature is quickly set to protect the server.

Read/Write Speed

This network attached storage supports several file systems that allow for high speed data transfer, especially enhancing user experience with Windows and Mac OS systems. These systems include EXT4, EXT3, FAT32, high-speed NTFS and the HFS+. The read write speed is fast enough to support multiple HD streams (recording and viewing) at the same time without pauses, hesitations or buffering issues.

Price Range, Value and Affordability

The QNAP TS-259 Pro + is considered one of the most affordable servers for data storage and transfers as well as shared networks. The setup and maintenance is one area where savings are realized. The TS-259 is much lower than the competition for the IP storage area network that your company needs.

The price range for your solution is between $300 and $500 for the simple system, QNAP TS-259 Pro+ on competitive sites like Newegg and Amazon. It is well worth mentioning that storage variations in the system you purchase make a big difference in the cost. The amount of storage purchased with your system such as 1, 2 or 4 terabytes will show a difference in price between $100 and $200.

There are further variations in cost with technical sites that only retail hardware and software. Doing some research is worthwhile to find the best price available to you.

The software included with acquiring this unit is touted as being one of the strong points. This means that the support for the system has a great foundation for getting users set up quickly. Automatic backup of the entire network is a plus feature for users. Another important note from user review is that the system is upgradable and the initial investment is money well spent. The user has the opportunity to upgrade as needed dependent on their growth speed.

The feature that allows downloading to be done in the background and the user can go on about their business is a simple feature but a really great feature that users appreciate. Also, the web-based interface is user friendly. The small business reviews were really focused on the permissions being easy to set up and maintain. The system is very energy efficient.

Users recommend reviewing any additional hard drives for drive compatibility if you intend to add additional storage. This is very important since the manufacturer does have some drives on their do not use list. The other critical point from user reviews is the lack of strong technical support. However, the instructions and ease in using the software make this issue very tolerable. And, there is an online community of users that can also help with any issues you may have.
