The WeGotServed forum has an interesting post on preparing your Windows Home Server 2011 machine for disaster and using the bare metal recovery capability to restore the server itself. The tutorial explains the problem:
One of the more impressive, and somewhat overlooked, features of WHS2011 backup is the ability to perform a Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) of the server itself. In the "old days" in the event of a server crash, the operating system and appropriate hardware drivers had to be re-installed, followed by the backup software, and then a full restore with all the subsequent incremental backups had to be applied. With WHS2011, re-building a server after a server or system disk crash can be accomplished with a few mouse clicks in less than an hour - provided we've spent a little time preparing to perform a BMR before the need arises. The purpose of this tutorial is to do just that: help prepare for the worst by ensuring we're able to easily preform a BMR to our WHS2011 system.

The tutorial provides a lot of detail - including tips for using external drives that at first don't seem to work. So, I'd recommend reading it carefully if you have a WHS 2011 and still don't have the server backup working.
Part II of the tutorial which provides instruction on how to use the backup you created is here.
