Thecus N4800 Review on Bjorn3D

Thecus N4800Selling for a bit over $600 on Newegg, the Thecus N4800 is a 4 drive NAS powered by an Intel D2700 Atom processor and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. Unique among NAS devices, this Thecus NAS has an HDMI port on the back with the promise that it will serve not only as a server for streaming media, but will also be a media player as well. That is, once this feature is enabled, you will be able to plug the NAS directly into your TV.

The Atom D2700 process is a 64 bit processor with hyperthreading support running at 2.13GHz, and the DDR3 RAM is among the fastest supplied with mainstream consumer NAS products.

The testing during the review process determined that the Thecus N4800 is a fast NAS for media streaming, achieving close to 60Mps in the 4x HD streaming test on the Intel NAS Performance Toolkit. This test is a good test to mimic real-world conditions where you might have multiple media players playing different HD videos at the same time.

Part of the conclusion summarizes the performance:

Thecus markets the N4800 as not just a simple NAS device but also a HD content streaming machine with the included HDMI port that allows the unit to be connected to any HDMI input displays. The performance of the unit definitely makes it one of the best HD streaming NAS device out there (bear in mind that the current firmware is yet to support streaming HD content through the HDMI port). However, the unit may not be the most ideal if you are considering using it as a high traffic file server since its mixed file transfer is not that great.

I've owned several Thecus NAS boxes. They are among the leaders in price-performance. Their software can't match the features or polish of Synology or QNAP boxes, but they have made great strides in that direction.

Check it out on Newegg.
