Thecus N4800 NAS Reviewed

Smallnetbuilder has reviewed the Thecus N4800 4 bay NAS server. The Thecus N4800 NAS is an Atom D2700 based 4 bay server with built in battery backup (pretty unique feature), USB3.0 and HDMI ports (HDMI is another unusual feature for a server or a NAS unit), and 1 GB of RAM.

Smallnetbuilder rates the noise level of this NAS as low:

I rated noise as low. The low hum of the four drives was audible in my quiet home office, but there was little fan noise, even under the load imposed by our benchmark tests.

Power usage was low when using the Seagate drives that Thecus provided for the review:

Thecus supplied the N4800 with four 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST31000524AS) drives for testing. They brought total power consumption with all drives spun up to 43 W and 22 W with the drives spun down via the programmable idle drive power save feature.

The Thecus GUI and software features have improved over the years until now Smallnetbuilder is rating the software polish and features as essentially comparable to those available from Synology and QNAP.

Speed of the NAS was tested to be within the top range of modern 4-bay NAS devices. See the Smallnetbuilder site for a full list of speed test comparisons and results.
